Upwork

In by Michael Michelini

Looking to hire people online and pay them by the hour – then this is your place.

Upwork (I still liked the old name oDesk) is the biggest freelancer platform on the web. It was formed with the merger of Odesk and Elance and named Upwork in 2015.

How does it work?

Pretty straight forward – you post a “job” or task or project you need to get done (please be as detailed as possible) and the network of applicants apply to do the work. You can do it fixed price or hourly – although I feel the trend has been moving more towards doing it hourly.

You are not hiring these people directly – you are paying Upwork and then the platform takes their commission and pays out to the freelancers.

This can be good or bad – some people use this for a lot of their team – as they don’t need to worry about HR, payroll, or time tracking. Others (like me) know that we will need to invest in time tracking and HR procedures (yes it is a headache) to get people from around the world working with you full time.

I recommend using Upwork if you are looking for part time or project based freelancers. It is also a great place to get started with the wild world of working with online teams, and is a trusted and reliable platform.

Check it out today. Pay people from around the world with your credit card, the world really is crazy isn’t it! Access Upwork here
